Results

With one pilot completed and one in the works, we are already seeing extremely positive results from our program.

In our initial pilot, 70% of girls noted increased confidence, 40% felt the program helped them to become more open minded, caring, or understanding, and 80% said they learned that the importance of storytelling to individual and community empowerment. Most of the girls also reported feeling that they formed a strong community through sharing and hearing each other’s stories.

In the words of one of our participants:

Having experienced Girls Amplified, I personally feel that I am not alone. You learn about the experiences of other participants and learn that everybody has a story to tell. You build a sense of community within the group by having opened up to people you may or may have never met. By sharing and listening to stories in Girls Amplified, I learned that experiences are meant to be shared in order to create a strong and unexpected bond between a reader and a writer.

We also surveyed the satisfaction of our initial school partner, the results of which are below:

Do you think Girls Amplified was beneficial to the students who participated?
Being a part of Girls Amplified was DEFINITELY beneficial. The students who chose to be a part of the program are mostly rather quiet and reserved in classes and at school in general. Girls Amplified gave them an avenue through which to express themselves and share their stories, many of which were stories of struggles and hardships that they had overcome. It also gave them a sense of belonging and of being a part of a community of supportive and encouraging peers.

What changes, if any, did you notice in the students who participated?
The students who participated in Girls Amplified impressed me because I never expected them to open up as much as they did. Throughout the course of the semester, I watched a group of rather timid and reserved young women become more confident and comfortable with themselves. The same students who rarely spoke up during school classes found their voice and shared their ideas and experiences with others.

Would you have Girls Amplified back at your campus in the future? Why?
Yes, absolutely. Girls Amplified provided the girls who participated with an opportunity to share their stories and to have their voices heard. It encouraged their creativity and gave them the confidence to share details about the most difficult parts of their lives.

How did you feel watching the final showcase performances?
The showcase had me in tears. Since I know each of the girls who participated very well, I felt extremely proud of them for standing in front of an audience and sharing their creativity and their stories. I was impressed by their creations and awed at the courage that they displayed.
