Why We’re Launching Girls Amplified

July 18, 2015 By ashleycadaret

  1. Because arts programs in schools are constantly in danger of being defunded across the United States.
  2. Because theater education and media literacy have an empirical, positive influence on students’ achievement, self-esteem, and critical thinking.
  3. Because, while there are many arts programs for kids and for girls across the country, there are few that use theater, media, and storytelling as a way to not only empower individuals but also as a tool for building community and bringing about social change.
  4. Because people still don’t listen to, trust, or believe women when they speak.
  5. Because women and girls are still underrepresented on screen.
  6. Because we not only want girls to have confidence and ability in telling their own stories through theater and media, we also want them to be able to:
    — listen to and believe stories of those with different experiences from their own
    — tell the stories of their communities
    — collaborate
    — mentor others
  7. Because we want girls to understand that narratives have the power to shape society for better or for worse.
  8. Because we want more girls wielding that power to change society for the better.
